Andy Markelz
Andrew M. Markelz, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education and assistant department chair at Ball State University. Born and raised in Homer, Alaska, Dr. Markelz has travelled, worked, and lived in a variety of countries and cultures. He entered the field of education as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Republic of Kiribati (2004-2007). Dr. Markelz began his special education teaching career in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he taught as a special education teacher while working towards his master’s degree from Arcadia University. Dr. Markelz continued his education at The Pennsylvania State University, earning his doctorate in special education with a focus on teacher education policy and law.
Today, Dr. Markelz has several peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals. He is founding editor of the Journal of Special Education Preparation and has authored multiple books. Dr. Markelz serves on the executive board of the Teacher Education Division for the Council for Exceptional Children and is committed to expediting the novice-to-expert teaching curve by preparing special educators to implement proactive classroom management strategies and develop meaningful and legally defensible individualized education programs.
Personal Stuff
Family
Andy currently resides in Muncie, Indiana, with his wife (Lindsey) and two children (Kai - 10 and Tiana - 8). The family enjoys travelling, gardening, sitting around campfires, and entreprenuer-ing together.
Hobbies
Andy enjoy's outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and golfing. The family has gotten into beekeeping which has been a great learning experience... not to mention all the honey!
Inventions
The Markelz's are a family of entreprenuers. They worked as a team to invent Oggles (originally Kai's idea), which are goggles that make hairwashing fun! The Markelz's hold several design patents and have licenesed Oggles to a company. Expect to see Oggles for sale soon! Andy and Lindsey invented the Collar Keeper which makes hanging collared shirts easy. A utility patent for the Collar Keeper was recently secured with the hopes of a licensing deal in the future.
